The day began with a fantastic walk at Bedford Reservation. Yup, waterfalls 'n everything. There are hundreds of acres there to explore and only rarely do we see anyone else. This morning the ground was hard, the air fresh and autumnal. Fallen leaves crunched under foot, and when we arrived there was a thin veneer of ice on the shallowest pond which had all but surrendered to the morning sun by the time we left. The trailhead we use is under ten miles from the house. It's part of the greater Emerald Necklace that encircles a massive area of Northern Ohio. It's no Chugach, but for Ohio not too shabby.
Resveratrol is back in the news. New research reported in the journal Nature last month showed that resveratrol, in addition to its well known cardioprotective and anti-cancer qualities, extened the lifespan of mice about fifty-two percent. Google returned over 599 hits to various newsfeeds that picked up on the discovery. The highest concentration of resveratrol is found in the skins of grapes, making red wine a fantastic source, but you'd have to drink about 3000 glasses to get the dose the mice were given.
A quick web search turned up a whole bunch of "natural medicine" sites that sell reseveratrol in supplement form. The highest concentration I found was 50 mg/tablet. If memory serves that's about the concentration the mice were given. Given the Bacchanalian amounts of red wine consumed in this house you'd think Master 'n Mom might be shoe-ins to become Centarians. Probably not given the low concentration in wine, but chase a 50 mg supplement with a glass of Pinot (pictured) once daily and it might well happen.
Reserveratrol hasn't been tested in dogs yet. Hmm. Think the world's s ready for the first ever one hundred year old Airedale?
