Blaaaaah!
Mom Kayaks Lake Erie 7.29.2006
Hot. Horrendously, horibbly & hideously hot. Desperately seeking relief, Mom and Master tripped down to Lake Erie this weekend for a few hours of kayaking. If you ever find yourself in the heartland and are eager for some fun on the water check out the guys at 41° North. A pleasant, helpful, and laid back bunch of fellows. Not at all annoyingly officious like too many other Ohioans.
Even this Blue Heron must've been hot, though evidently not too hot to eat. If you'll look closely you might see the fish in the U of his neck he ate just before this picture was taken. A Rocky River delicacy for sure.
Then today, Sunday, Master cycled with a new bunch of guys who enjoyed keeping the pace at or above twenty MPH. They left at 8:15 AM, all ten of them, and twenty miles into the ride it was already near ninety. And humid. Nice routing though; you'd be surprised how few miles you have to pedal away from the University before you find yourself riding on countrified roads. By mile forty five they were all dripping wet.
Afterwards, Mom and Master drove to the Mentor Headlands beach, but discovered the access road was closed due to flooding. They got a tremendous amount of rain there last week. Another beach nearby was open, but disappointing. So it was off to Pickle Bills for drinks and calamari. They used to have a floating bar at Pickel Bills but the bartender said it drifted away during the storm. "It's hung up on a beach near the nuclear plant down the way a bit, but the officials won't let us near it to tow it back. It's full of booze and food and furniture, too. 911 thing I guess."
"Pickle Bill," the latest collateral casuality in the war on terror. Every bit as dangerous as Cat Stevens I'm sure!
